Shortly after its publication in 1845, Prosper Mérimée’s novella Carmen was labelled shocking and scandalous. Thirty years later, Georges Bizet premiered his Carmen in Paris, and it has since become one of the most frequently performed operas in the world. The story of the gypsy woman who chooses death rather than surrender her freedom or love remains one of the most compelling and enduring modern myths surrounding the enigmatic nature of Woman. Over the years, Carmen has been revisited by countless directors, acquiring new facets and interpretations. Yet one essential element endures: Carmen, the fatal anti heroine, remains the unyielding centre of every version. Performed in French with Portuguese surtitles.
